A condensed version of the Hearts For Elders Welcome Packet. Everyone who signs up agrees to follow it.
Who we are
Hearts For Elders is a nonprofit run by young people who connect with older adults through friendship, activities and kindness. The Illinois chapter brings that mission to senior communities across our state.
Our mission
To improve the lives of seniors by connecting them with caring young volunteers and fighting loneliness in our communities.
Safety guidelines
- Volunteer in a group or with approved supervision. Never visit residents alone.
- RSVP and arrive on time. Only registered volunteers attend.
- Sign in and out with your name, arrival and departure.
- Follow facility staff. They know residents' needs and rules best.
- Dress appropriately. Neat, comfortable and modest.
- Stay healthy. Stay home if sick and sanitize your hands.
- No gifts, money or personal contact exchange without board and staff approval.
- Respect privacy. Photos only with permission and consent.
- Keep phones away unless part of an activity.
- Report concerns right away to a board member or staff.

Slow down, repeat kindly and give time to respond.
Respect
Treat everyone as an adult and honor their choices.
Listening
Ask questions and let residents lead the conversation.
Clear communication
Speak clearly and face the person. Skip the slang.
Inclusion
Invite everyone to join at their own comfort and ability.
Positivity
Bring warmth and encouragement to every interaction.

- Chair Yoga: gentle seated exercise
- Brain Puzzles: games, trivia, puzzles
- Arts & Crafts: cards, painting, projects
- Technology Assistance: phones and video calls
- Reading & Read-Alouds: stories and conversation
- Other Activities: your ideas, with approval
Tracking your hours
Sign in and out at every event. After the event, open your dashboard, choose the event from your past events and submit your arrival and departure times. A board member confirms them.
